The AEW.3 Gannet entered service in 1958 and featured a large radome under the fuselage with a long range air warning radar. The Gannet thus, was able to extend the radar range of the Aircraft Carrier it was based on and vector the Royal Navy's fighter's to intercept enemy aircraft. It was retired in 1978 when the Royal Navy's last large aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal, was retired.
This is Sword’s model of the Gannet AEW.3. Sword is a new manufacturer based in the Czech Republic. The kit is injection moulded in plastic and the level of detail is excellent with engraved panel lines and also has a small fret of etch metal parts for the cockpit. This is the same kit of the Gannet Sword released before but it has added resin parts to make the radar operators compartment. There are 2 different options for markings for aircraft from HMS Ark Royal and HMS Hermes.
The Sword 1/72 Fairey Gannet AEW.3 from the plastic aircraft model kits range accurately recreates the real life British airborne early warning aircraft.
